On Newsweek this week Andrew Ross Hay goes ” Under The Boardwalk”, or maybe ” Up On The Roof”, as he interviews Michael Williams of the legendary American group The Drifters.

Begining in 1953, when Clyde McPhatter (formerly of Billy Ward & The Dominoes) created the new singing sensations, the group has gone on to thrill audiences for generations. Early songs like, “Money Honey”, “Such A Night”, and “Adorable” soon gave way to all time classics such as, “Save The Last Dance For Me”, “Saturday Night At The Movies”, “There Goes My First Love”, and “You’re More Than A Number In My Little Red Book”.

Over the years, as was planned, musicians have drifted in and out, with the knock on effect that several groups now lay claim to the name. However, only one group is legally allowed to do so and they are the ones who are currently on a year long tour that reaches the Kings Theatre, Southsea, this Sunday.

In the interview Michael talks about the history of The Drifters, his life, his career and even sings an unaccompanied version of “Under The Boardwalk”.

Also on the show, Andrew goes behind the scenes of the annual Mayor making ceremony as Councillor Richard Dickson becomes the new Mayor of Gosport.

That’s Newsweek this Friday at 7.30pm, repeated Sunday at 2pm, only on Radio Haslar.
